1. Le Dam Ngo (The Pre-Engagement Ceremony)
- Significance: This is the first official meeting between the two families. Its purpose is to formally "set the matter" and grant official permission for the couple to openly pursue their relationship toward marriage.
- Rituals: The groom's family prepares an offering tray consisting of betel leaves and areca nuts, tea, and wine to bring to the bride's family home.
- Both sides engage in conversation, learn about each other's family backgrounds, and look for auspicious dates and times for the next steps in the wedding process.
2. Le An Hoi (The Engagement Ceremony)
- Significance: This serves as the official announcement to both extended families regarding the couple's betrothal. From this moment, the bride officially becomes the groom's "fiancée".
- Rituals: The groom's family brings traditional engagement gift trays (tráp)—which typically include betel leaves and areca nuts, green rice cakes (bánh cốm), tea, wine, fruits, and a roasted pig—to the bride's home.
- Once the bride's family accepts the gifts, the couple offers incense at the bride's ancestral altar to pay their respects and formally introduce themselves to the ancestors.
3. The Wedding Day (Bride Procession & Nuptials)
This is the most important day, featuring a continuous sequence of traditional rituals:
- The Bride Request Ceremony (Lễ Xin Dâu): Before the official procession begins, a representative from the groom's family brings a small ceremonial box (typically containing betel leaves and areca nuts) into the bride’s home to formally request permission to escort the bride.
- The Bride Procession (Lễ Đón Dâu / Thân Nghinh): The groom enters the room to present a bouquet to the bride. Together, they step out to perform a ritual before the bride's ancestral altar. Following this, the groom's family officially escorts the bride back to his family home.
- The Ancestral Ceremony at the Groom's House (Lễ Gia Tiên Tại Nhà Trai): Upon arrival, the couple lights incense to report to the groom's ancestors and is formally introduced to the groom’s parents and extended family.
- The Wedding Reception (Tiệc Cưới): Both families jointly host a banquet to celebrate, share the joy, and entertain friends and relatives.
4. Le Lai Mat (The Post-Wedding Visit)
This ceremony demonstrates the new groom's respect and filial piety toward his parents-in-law. It also serves to comfort the bride and help ease her homesickness after moving into her husband's home. It typically takes place 1 to 3 days after the wedding day. The newlywed couple brings a small gift basket—usually containing tea, cakes, or traditional sticky rice and chicken—back to the bride’s parents' house to enjoy a warm, intimate family meal together.
