Booking Info
Traveling by speedboat from Châu Đốc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) is widely considered the most scenic and efficient way to cross the border. Because the boat operators handle hundreds of tourists daily, the "Visa on Arrival" process at the river border is streamlined and very easy for travelers.
Here is the updated guide for the visa procedure as of late 2025:
1. Essential Preparation
Before you board the boat in Vietnam (usually at the Châu Đốc pier), ensure you have the following:
Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date and have at least two blank pages.
Cash: 35 USD in cash. It is highly recommended to bring clean, crisp bills, as border officials may reject torn or folded notes. (While the official government fee is $30, the extra $5 typically covers the service/processing fee used by the boat crew to expedite your application).
Passport Photo: Most boat companies now handle the paperwork digitally or via the "e-Arrival" system, but it is still wise to carry one 4x6 cm photo just in case.
2. The Border Crossing Procedure
The journey takes approximately 5 hours. The "easy assistance" you mentioned works as follows:
Step 1 (Exit Vietnam): The boat stops at the Vĩnh Xương border gate. The boat crew will collect your passports and take them to the Vietnamese immigration office to get your exit stamps while you relax at the riverside café.
Step 2 (Enter Cambodia): The boat then moves a short distance to the Kaam Samnor border gate.
Crew Assistance: You will hand your passport and the 35 USD to the boat crew. They will fill out the forms and manage the interaction with Cambodian immigration officers on your behalf.
Step 3 (Arrival): Once the visas are stamped, the crew returns the passports to everyone on board, and you continue the final 3-hour stretch of the journey directly to the Titanic Pier in Phnom Penh.
3. Special Notes for 2025
Vietnamese Citizens: If you hold a Vietnamese passport, you are visa-exempt for up to 30 days. You do not need to pay the 35 USD, but the boat crew will still help you process your entry/exit stamps.
e-Visa Warning: While Cambodia offers an e-Visa online, many river borders do not yet support them. It is safer and often faster to use the "Visa on Arrival" service provided by the boat crew to avoid technical delays at the water gate.
e-Arrival Card: Cambodia has introduced a mandatory "e-Arrival" card (via the official arrival.gov.kh website or app). You can complete this up to 7 days before your trip, or the boat crew can assist you with the paper version during your cycling holiday with us.
